Reported speech

Se utiliza para comunicar a alguien lo que otra persona ha dicho, sin usar las palabras exactas que éste utilizó.

Oraciones declarativas:
Los verbos modales pasan a pasado en el estilo indirecto.

• Present simple: “I work from 9 to 5”. He said that he worked from 9 to 5. (“Trabajo de 9 a 5”. El dijo que trabajaba de 9 a 5)
  
• Present continuous: “I’m doing my homework”. He said that he was doing his homework. (“Estoy haciendo mi deberes”. El dijo que estaba haciendo sus deberes)
  
• Present perfect: “We have never been to England”. They said they had never been to England. (“Nunca hemos estado en Inglaterra”. Dijeron que nunca habían estado en Inglaterra)
  
• Simple past: “I saw her at the cinema”. He said he had seen her at the cinema. (“Le vi en el cine”. El dijo que le había visto en el cine)
  
• Can: “I can’t sing”. He said that he couldn’t sing. (“No puedo cantar”. El dijo que no podía cantar)
  
• Will: “I’ll see you tonight”. He said that he would see us that night. (“Os veré esta noche”. El dijo que nos vería esta noche)

Órdenes indirectas:
Para indicar una orden en estilo indirecto, utilizamos la siguiente estructura: sujeto + verbo introductor (say, asked, warned, etc.) + objeto + to + infinitivo. Ejemplos:
He said to Jack, “open the door, please”. He told Jack to open the door. (El dijo a Jack, “abre la puerta, por favor. Dijo a Jack abre la puerta)
He said to me, “don’t talk”. He told me not to talk. (El me dijo, “no hables”. Me dijo no hables.)

Oraciones interrogativas indirectas:
Van introducidas por ask, know and want to wonder. La estructura de la oracion indirecta es particula interrogativa + sujeto + sujeto. Ejemplos:
He said, “what is her name?”. He asked what her name was. (El dijo, “cual es su nombre”. El preguntó cual era su nombre)
He said, “Can I use your pen”. He asked me if he could use my pen. (El dijo, “puedo usar tu boli”. El me preguntó si podía usar mi boli.
